Dermaplaning: Your Step-by-Step Guide
There are many ways to get your skin to glow with great health and vitality, and one of the simplest is dermaplaning. Here’s a detailed look at how dermaplaning works to bring out the best in your skin.

When you clean your house, your car, or your clothes, do you ever marvel at how much dirt piles up on surfaces? Well, your skin is no different, and dirt and debris are constantly clinging to your face and clogging your pores.

That’s why we love resurfacing treatments like dermaplaning that remove all the things that get in the way of glowing skin, including dirt, dead skin cells, and even that layer of peach fuzz on your face.

In this month’s blog post, the team of skin techs here at Dutch Hollow Medical Day Spa dives into more detail about dermaplaning and how it can bring out the best in your skin and make it glow with great health.

Dermaplaning basics

We referenced that dermaplaning is a resurfacing treatment, and we want to expand on this. As the name suggests, resurfacing is a technique in which we can clear away the top layer of your skin, and there are many different ways in which we can do that, such as with chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser therapies, and the more straightforward dermaplaning.

In fact, these treatments are very popular in the United States — there were more than 3.7 million skin resurfacing treatments in 2024 in the United States.

With dermaplaning, we use a specialized blade called a dermatome to clear away the things that can make your skin look dull, such as debris, dead skin cells, and thin hairs called vellus (peach fuzz). Your body contains 5 million hair follicles, and some of these show up as peach fuzz on your face.

Skin issues that dermaplaning can improve

As for who might benefit from dermaplaning, our patients love the treatment for:

  • Brightening dull skin by clearing away dead skin cells
  • Removing scaly skin patches
  • Improving the appearance of acne scars and fine lines
  • Removing facial hair

Dermaplaning is ideal for addressing surface issues, as it clears away the top layer to reveal healthier, more youthful-looking skin.

Clearing the way to skin that glows

Our dermaplaning treatment typically lasts about 30-60 minutes, and here’s what we do:

  • Apply a numbing cream to your face, if necessary
  • Gently run the dermatome back and forth across your skin
  • Apply a gel or serum after we’re done

And that’s it — dermaplaning is fairly simple and straightforward as facials go. You may have some redness after your dermaplaning treatment, but this side effect should clear quickly.

As for results, you should see an immediate improvement in your skin tone right after your treatment, and these results will improve as new skin cells reveal themselves.
